Day 1

After arrival at Atatürk Airport, check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free to start soaking up the unique atmosphere of this city built on two continents. At 6:30 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner with wine at your hotel.

Day 2

Founded by the greeks as byzantium more than 2,500 years ago, renamed constantinople in 330 ad when constantine the great elected it the capital of the roman empire, and finally called istanbul after the ottoman conquest in the 15th century, the city on the bosporus remains one of the most exciting places in the world. Its strategic location as gateway between orient and occident, the islamic and the christian worlds, and the black sea and the mediterranean predestined it for a turbulent history. Guided sightseeing starts at topkapi palace, the residence of the ottoman sultans. Admire the rich and spectacular kaftans of the sultans that were worn during the ottoman period. Then, tour the hagia sophia, followed by the roman hippodrome, and visit sultan ahmet’s blue mosque. [lf] a special visit has been included to the underground cistern, brought to life in dan brown’s best seller inferno. For a taste of turkish nightlife, join our optional dinner outing and discover the fascination of belly dancing.

Day 3

Visit the colorful grand bazaar before setting out on your discovery tour of a country with the population of britain and more than three times its size. Drive along the european shore of the sea of marmara and head westward through sunflower and olive groves to the dardanelles. Visit the wwi battlefields on the gallipoli peninsula, where allied troops, mainly australians and new zealanders, suffered heavy casualties in a disastrous campaign. Pay tribute to the heroes of those tragic months of 1915 at the anzac cemetery and the lone pine memorial. Travel by ferry across the dardanelles to the troy area for your first overnight in asia on the aegean coast.

Day 4

Enjoy a guided visit of TROY, the perfect place to brush up on Homer’s Trojan War—hollow wooden horse and all! Vistas of the Greek isle of Lesbos greet you as you follow the shores of the Bay of Edremit. Continue south to Pergamum, an ancient center of learning and the arts, and visit its MUSEUM. After lunch, visit the ASCLEPION, a shrine to the Greek god of medicine. Drive to Kusadasi for an overnight.

Day 5

Today, visit ephesus, home of the greek philosopher heraclitus, and later, the capital of roman asia minor. Visit the site of ancient ruins and the archaeological museum with its famous statue of artemis, goddess of fertility and destiny. At this beautiful location, a souvenir group picture will be taken. Then, travel along the silk road, and through the lush valley of the meandering menderes river. Next, pamukkale. The name means “cotton castle” and refers to the spectacular white lime cascades formed by its hot springs. At your hotel tonight, maybe a leisurely bath in a pool of hot thermal water might be just the way to relax after a busy touring day. (b,d)

Day 6&7&8

This morning, visit the fascinating archaeological site of hierapolis, the thermal resort founded by a pergamene king in 190 bc and greatly enlarged and embellished by the romans. Then, enjoy the ever-changing cultivated landscapes and timeless scenes of rural life on your way to bursa. Spot farmers working their fields or transporting produce in traditional horse-drawn carts. Bursa lies in the shade of the uludag–also called mount olympus of mysia—a 7,700-foot-high ski mountain surrounded by lovely orchards. Founded by the greeks, like most ancient cities in this part of the world, and hotly contested during the crusades, bursa had its heyday as the first capital of the ottoman empire. Next day , Visit iznik, site of the first ecumenical council. See its ancient city walls before visiting st. Sophia church and the archaeological museum. Later, return to istanbul. Tonight, a private cruise on the bosporus river and a farewell dinner with wine at a local restaurant celebrates the success of your turkish adventure. Your vacation ends with breakfast next morning. Day 1&2

Meet at the crossroads of East and West - the effervescent capital of Istanbul launch your journey of discovery through centuries of turmoil and triumph. Spend the day exploring after being transferred to your hotel. Later, you'll meet your Travel Director and travel companions for a memorable Welcome Reception. Next day, delve into the treasures of the Ottoman Empire, strolling through the exquisite Topkapi Palace with its spellbinding views of the Bosphorus. We explore the Basilica of Hagia Sophia, once one of the greatest churches in all of Christendom, before following in the footsteps of the faithful for a visit to the Blue Mosque - its six minarets and beautiful blue Iznik tiles are a sight to behold. Later, we visit the Byzantine Hippodrome to see where thundering chariots once raced to victory. The rest of the day is yours to explore the city. Consider an optional cruise along the Bosphorus, whose waters separate the European and Asian sides of the city.

Day 3

We remember the heroism of the many thousands of men who fought bravely at Gallipoli. We'll see Lone Pine Cemetery and the battlefields that today still hold special significance for the Turkish, Australian and New Zealand nations. Spend a quiet moment commemorating the lives lost at Anzac Cove and Chunuk Bair, where some of the fiercest fightings took place during World War I. This evening we stay in Canakkale where tonight we'll dine in our hotel.

Day 4

Visit a land of Trojan legends, an ancient city immortalized by Homer in the stories of King Priamus, Hector, Paris and the beautiful Helen. We admire the archaeological excavations at Troy revealing nine separate periods of settlement and the symbolic replica wooden Trojan horse commemorating the epic war machine constructed by the Greeks to end a lengthy siege. We continue to the ancient kingdom of Pergamon to visit the Asclepion Medical Centre whose staff of entwined snakes remains a symbol of modern medicine today. This afternoon, we 'Connect With Locals' in the village of Demircidere over a Be My Guest lunch. We travel to the broad boulevards of seaside Izmir later and dine in our hotel this evening.

Day 5

Journey into antiquity and explore the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Ephesus admiring the well-preserved façade of the Library of Celsus and its famous Temple of Artemis. We visit the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Hadrian guarded by Medusa's head, and the Great Theatre, built by the Romans in the 2nd century and still in use today. Relax and enjoy the blissful thermal pools at your hotel in Pamukkale. Later, consider joining an Optional Experience to watch the dizzying twirling of the mystical Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi sect.

Day 6

This morning we enjoy a leisurely visit to the ancient ruins of the Holy City of Hierapolis, imagining ancient patrons seeking revival and rest within their limestone-laden thermal springs. Our last stop today is in the lush silk center of Bursa where tonight we dine in our hotel.

Day 7&8

We visit the exquisite Grand Mosque in Bursa before returning to Istanbul. Haggle for the best deals at the Grand Bazaar before following in the footsteps of the faithful for a visit to the Blue Mosque. Our final evening together sees us enjoy a Farewell dinner with our fellow travelers. Next day, we say a fond farewell to Turkey and newfound friends as we prepare to depart to the airport for our flight home.
